Getting away from the boring old routine..
I joined CFPG in the Summer of 2016. Prior to that I’d been a member at a various chain gyms, and done a lot of running/hiking/playing hoops on my own. Going to a traditional gym always felt underwhelming. I’d usually do some cardio, then aimlessly lift whatever weights were open at that particular moment, browse some sports highlights on my phone, and then go change in the locker room in between a couple bottomless old guys having a casual chat. I’d end up spending 2-hours at the gym and not even feel like I got in a good workout.
Meanwhile a buddy of mine was getting into CrossFit down in Santa Cruz. He was getting results and loving it, so I thought I’d give it a try. I was actually pretty slow to start because I thought I needed to improve my baseline fitness in order to start, but I finally came in for a drop-in class and realized that the workouts can be scaled to any level. My first drop-in WOD was a team WOD and I was paired up with Matt Kane and Coach Drew who along with Coach Clyde and the rest of the folks, were super welcoming and encouraging. I couldn’t move for about three days after that first WOD, but as soon as I could, I signed up for Foundations.
Since starting CrossFit I’ve definitely gotten stronger, my endurance is much improved which I benefit from in my other endeavors like backpacking, and in general I have more energy throughout the day. But perhaps the biggest change I’ve felt has been in my back health and posture. As a tall and thin guy, I’ve always dealt with backaches and less than ideal posture, but with the strength training and mobility exercises in CFPG I’ve noticed a huge improvement.
